The question I’ve been asked most the past couple days: How did the flag change happen now, in 2020, during an unprecedented legislative session in the midst of a worldwide health pandemic?
The Mississippi Flag Commission has narrowed the search for a new state flag to five designs. Which is your favorite?
Wilkes said she was trying to make the point that Mississippians should get to vote on whether to remove the Confederate emblem from the state flag.
The commission will fly the five finalists in front of the Old Capitol in Jackson Aug. 25. They will then select a single design on Sept. 2.
The flag commission met Friday and narrowed selections down to the final nine.
The commission will choose one new flag to put before voters on the Nov. 3 ballot. Voters can either approve or reject the new design.
A flag expert noted that the Mississippi Legislature has mandated the commission violate one of the core principles of flag design: lettering on the banner.
