On Thursday, teenagers from high schools across Jackson Public School District gathered in the Forest Hill Auditorium for the “Teens Take the Lead” Mayoral Candidate Forum.

Maya, a Mississippi native, covers the city of Jackson for Mississippi Today. She joins the staff from The Gulf States Newsroom, where she reported on reproductive health, poverty and Black communities across three states. Previously, she was the Managing Editor for The Lighthouse, covering racial inequity, and Deputy News Editor for the Jackson Free Press, where she covered the criminal justice beat. Her work has been featured on NPR and in Scalawag Magazine. She’s been awarded a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Hard News and a National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Award for her stories on Emmett Till and the Mississippi Delta.
