The son of a Sledge sharecropper, Charley Pride became a country music legend and the most successful African American artist of the genre. The honky-tonk baritone recorded 52 Top Ten singles, 28 of them No. 1 hits.

Roll On Mississippi was written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan. It was released in February 1981 as the second single and title track from Pride’s album Roll On Mississippi. The song peaked at No.  7 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
