Topping Mississippi news this week:
• Rep. Andy Gipson, R-Braxton, felt the heat earlier this week after killing a bill that would have added domestic abuse as grounds for divorce in Mississippi. On Thursday, Gipson said he has a new plan — but wouldn’t give any details.
• After speaking at an immigrant rights news conference Wednesday, 22-year old Daniela Vargas was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. She is unlikely to get a hearing before an immigration judge before being processed for deportation, her lawyer says. She was brought to the United States by her parents when she was 7 years old.
• A bill limiting a candidate’s use of campaign money came closer to reality Tuesday. The House approved a Senate bill that, among other restrictions, would ban using campaign funds for mortgage, rent or utility payments unless the payment involves campaign activities or housing during the legislative session.
