The death of a 43-year-old prisoner at Mississippi State Penitentiary is under investigation, the state prisons department said this afternoon.

Randy Lee Burgess was pronounced dead at 2:44 a.m. in the emergency room at Parchman after suffering from stab wounds, according to a press release.

Burgess was convicted in 2006 of forgery, grand larceny and shoplifting in Rankin County; he was also convicted for a 2005 bank robbery in Olive Branch.
